Many people use social media out of boredom. We’ve all spent thirty minutes on the toilet scrolling through our Instagram feed at least once. However, it is important to create “scroll worthy” content as a blogger that will make readers come back for more. A substantial portion of this has to do with how long and how interesting you make your content.
There’s something I must admit. Although I love reading up on topics of interest such as film reviews and social issues, I have a very difficult time reading information-based content. Like myself, many others also have a similar problem. This can become especially tiring when you want to create a successful social media platform or blog but feel as though you are running in circles with information that doesn’t apply to you or that you already researched.
To save you the hassle, I have researched five blogs that give you tips and tricks on how to grow your social media audience and keep readers interested. Some sites even feature YouTube videos which explain content further or give you the option of watching instead of listening.
1. Buffer
If you enjoy a sleek layout with minimal background and design patterns, this website is for you! The writing style of Buffer’s articles tend to be a bit drier, but straight forward and informative. They are also easy to read and don’t take more than five minutes to finish. This website revolves around topics in social media such as experimentation, algorithms, twitter timelines, marketing research, case studies, and even upcoming social media conferences.
Each post is easy to read and typically shows an example and statistics to guide you through each step that’s laid out. These steps are explained in depth by contributing content creators who work for the company and have researched the best skills to achieve in any social media platform. A great article to visit is the “The State of Social 2018 Report: Your Guide to Latest Social Media Marketing Research [New Data]”, posted on January 18th, 2018. This article tackles questions such as the best way to utilize messaging apps and why businesses should utilize social media ads to drive revenue or page traffic.
2. Katie Lance
If you enjoy vibrant colors, such as red, white, and blue you’ll love Katie Lance’s blog! Her writing style is more conversational. She also includes YouTube videos of the content she created in case you are more of an auditory or visual learner. No worries, Katie’s voice will help you stay awake with other wise mundane content. She makes her videos interesting and fun with sound effects as well as cheerful music and visual aids to help you remember important tips.
Katie’s blog focuses on common mistakes and improvement techniques for most bloggers, vloggers, and companies. These posts typically show an in-depth technique on how bloggers, companies, and vloggers can retain traffic, consistently post, create engaging content, and ROI measurements. She also has a book titled, “#GetSocialSmart”, that breaks down how to build your social media platform from the moment you log on to your end goal.
3. SharePop
If you’re looking for exceptionally brief articles on social media that give compact detailed information, this may be the blog for you! The articles are mainly created for bloggers to keep current with social media updates, changes, and check in on how they are progressing through these applications. Each post on the website consists of a numbered step by step guide on how you can measure your growth. Most of the lists will seem common sense but are great reminders of things you may have overlooked when uploading your most recent post.
Like Buffer’s blog, SharePop utilizes a very simple and clean layout. If you’re looking for a colorful and vibrant blog, this may not be for you. However, the muted colors help you focus on the article content and since they’re so brief you don’t have enough time to become bored!
4. Amber Naslund
If you’re looking for a content creation guide, then Amber Naslund has the blog for you! Her articles primarily focus on the do’s and don’ts for posting on social media that are useful tips for anyone regardless of if you have a blog or not. Her articles are typically blunt but have a conversational tone to them. Often she uses her own blunders and successes as a guide for what is and isn’t appropriate social media content.
Though this may appear to be another social media blog on the surface, I enjoy the uniqueness of her blog. Amber has a profound writer’s voice that can come off as sassy but always challenges your viewpoint on social media debates. This bold stance on many social media etiquette's is a refreshing read.
Her blog also utilizes an oddly relaxing color palette that won’t make you feel overwhelmed with information. She also works as Senior Director in Industry Leadership for critically acclaimed website Hootsuite. A source I’ve recommended in one of my earlier posts.
5. Customer Experience Insight
Admittedly, this blog tends to feature longer articles that may seem overwhelming but are still easy to read for the beginner blogger. The article, “22 Ways to Add Value to Your Social Media Experience” is a fitting example of this. Each tip is numbered and highlighted, following a brief explanation of why the tip is essential.
Like Buffer, this blog posts a variety of topics ranging from social media customer service to how to connect with different age groups online. Featured on this site, are tabs that include “marketing”, “website design”, “customer experience”, etc. Each tab can best suit your need based on what content you are looking to expand your platform.
Though the content may come off cold with a website design to match it, don’t let it scare you away from the hearty tips each content creator provides!
